Bermuda Triangle

Double Triangles, Inverted Triangles, and triangular sets all figure in Scottish Country Dancing.   A few dances are even named after famous triangles, such as "The Bermuda Triangle," a legendary area in the North Atlantic with a sinister reputation.

Although not strictly a right triangle, the Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is a loosely defined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly bounded by San Juan, Puerto Rico, Miami, Florida, and and Bermuda, where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Popular culture has attributed various disappearances of aircraft and ships to the paranormal or activity caused by extraterrestrial beings.

Although analysis has shown that the number of ships and aircraft reported missing in the area is not significantly greater, than in any other part of the ocean, explanations for some of the strange occurrences for their disappearance have included:

  • supernatural leftover technology from the mythical lost continent of Atlantis

  • UFOs

  • natural compass variations in relation to the magnetic poles

  • human error

  • violent weather

  • hexagonal or honeycomb clouds

  • methane hydrates from fields of gas on the continental shelves - sometimes called "mud volcanoes" - which may produce regions of frothy water that are no longer capable of providing adequate buoyancy for ships.

  • rogue waves

Skeptics who wish to review the scientific evidence for natural phenomena that could strike vessels, can click the mapping of the perimeter of dreaded Bermuda Triangle.
