Farmer's Market Day

May 25

Other Scottish Country Dances for this Day

Today's Musings, History & Folklore

"Up at dawn, a sleepy yawn,
Off to market, hurry on!
First in line to grab the prize,
Freshest veggies for my eyes.

Dashing quick with bedhead hair,
Shoes mismatched—don’t really care.
Bump the rooster, scare the hens,
Gotta beat my market friends.

Carrots bright, and lettuce green,
Tomatoes red like I’ve never seen.
Laughing farmers, all amused,
As I claim the veggies I’ve perused.

Victory’s mine, I’m feeling grand,
With the best in hand-picked land.
Next week’s race, I’ll surely win,
Farmer’s market champ again!"

Scottish Country Dance may not be a competitive sport—but try telling that to someone navigating a crowded farmer’s market! Fortunately, your dancing skills might serve you well as you weave among the stalls in pursuit of the freshest produce. This lively jig was inspired by just such an adventure at the Vancouver Weekend Farmer’s Market, where timing is everything—especially if you have your eye on the choicest hydroponic lettuce.

The choreography of this dance playfully reflects the hustle and bustle of market day. In bars 1–4, the 1st couple can barely contain their excitement, nearly colliding as they scramble to get ready. Bars 5–8 depict the journey to the market, full of eager anticipation. Then, in bars 9–24, dancers meander through the stalls, hunting for the best prices, the ripest produce, and, of course, that elusive perfect head of lettuce.

Victory is sweet—they make it in time to snag the last one! The dance ends in joyful celebration with a circle round and back, a fitting tribute to a successful morning. Enjoy your salad days, dancers! 😀 🥕 🥕 🥬 🥬 🥗
