“Not CHEW-hoo-hoo or Chi-hoo-WHAT,
Or Chewy-wawa — fancy that!
It’s Chee-WAH-wah, now say it right,
Or brace yourself for yaps all night.
Though small enough for purse or lap,
They will not tolerate pronunciation pap"
~ Ode to a Chihuahua
This entire dance was inspired by an on-air television commercial’s mis-pronunciation of the name of this most fashionable of small breeds. Famous for their spirited confidence, dramatic flair, expressive personalities, and unwavering belief that they are considerably larger than they actually are, they appreciate being referred to as Chee-WAH-wah, not CHEW-HOO-HOO!
John Drewry’s lively 48 bar reel for four couples was devised to celebrate May Day and pays playful tribute to the worlds smallest canine. Originating in Chihuahua, Mexico, Chihuahuas are believed to descend from ancient dogs revered by the Toltecs and Aztecs, who considered them not merely companions, but spiritual guides as well. Their very name likely derives from the Nahuatl language and refers to the dry, sandy region of Chihuahua itself.
With wheels, reels, chases, and links, this energetic dance never stops moving. So nstead of the traditional “heuch” for the final circle, perhaps this dance calls for a spirited chorus of “Oooh Chihuahua!”🕺 💃 🤎 💛 🤎 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐾
Oooh! Chihuahua
Chihuahuas, while commonly seen as a singular breed, actually come in a variety of shapes and sizes that cater to a wide range of preferences. There are two main recognized types: the Smooth Coat (short-haired) and the Long Coat. Both types share the same diminutive frame and large, expressive eyes, but differ in their grooming needs. Additionally, Chihuahuas can be further distinguished by their head shapes: the ‘apple head’ featuring a rounded, dome-like skull which is the breed standard, and the ‘deer head’ which has a more elongated head and a slightly larger build. Colors and markings can vary extensively, offering palettes that range from solid black, white, and chocolate to tricolor or brindle. Despite these variations, all Chihuahuas are known for their loyalty, vibrancy, and outsized personality, making them a cherished companion regardless of the type.
