Dancing Dogs

Other Scottish Country Dances for this Day

Today's Musings, History & Folklore

"Collies tango, Poodles prance,
Labs and Goldens love to dance.
Dachshunds cha-cha, Boxers bop,
Bulldogs sway but mostly stop!

Amidst the spins, so calm, so wise,
The Skye Terrier shuts his eyes.
With flowing coat and steady poise,
He scorns the other dogs' loud noise.
'A dance," he sniffs, "should be refined—
Not all this bouncing, unaligned!'"

Dancing Dogs

The Skye Terrier is a breed with a storied past, deeply tied to Scotland’s history and culture. Known for their long, flowing coats and distinctive fringe that drapes over their dark, intelligent eyes, these sturdy little dogs were originally bred on the Isle of Skye to hunt vermin and small game. Their elegant yet rugged appearance reflects their dual nature: dignified and graceful in the home but fearless and determined in the field. Despite their small stature, Skye Terriers possess a strong, muscular build and a surprising amount of endurance.

Perhaps the most famous Skye Terrier in history is Greyfriars Bobby, a loyal companion who spent 14 years guarding his master's grave in Edinburgh. This unwavering devotion has cemented the breed’s reputation for faithfulness and affection.

Skye Terriers are known to form deep bonds with their families, often showing a reserved nature toward strangers but displaying immense love and loyalty to those they trust. While they are independent thinkers, they respond well to patient training and thrive in homes where they receive attention and gentle guidance.

In addition to their affectionate personalities, Skye Terriers have a distinctive silhouette, with their long bodies, feathered ears (which may be either pricked or dropped), and silky double coats that require regular grooming. Though their numbers have declined in recent decades, they remain a treasured breed among enthusiasts who appreciate their elegance, intelligence, and steadfast companionship. Whether strolling through the Scottish Highlands or curled up beside their owners, Skye Terriers embody the charm and resilience of their homeland.
