The Doctor's Dilemma
Celebrated on many different days throughout the world, Doctor's Day is a day to recognize the service of physicians to individuals, the greater community, and for their contribution to advancement in the fields of health and medicine.
In the United States, Doctors' Day is the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery. On March 30, 1842, in Jefferson, Georgia, Dr. Crawford Long used ether to anesthetize a patient, James Venable, and painlessly excised a tumor from his neck.
Hippocrates (460–377 BC) is commonly called the "Father of Medicine" or the "Father of Western Medicine." He is thought to be one of the first physicians to treat disease as being a result of natural rather than supernatural causes. He also founded the Hippocratic School, a medical school that focused on the healing power of nature as well as the importance of physical observation and the act of prognosis.
