Other Scottish Country Dances for this Day

Today's Musings, History & Folklore

"Don't Forget Your Ghillies!"

Devised by Patty Lindsay in honour of Lisa Garrett-O’Lear, a founding teacher of the Flying Ghillies Scottish Country Dancers in Dayton, Ohio, her students fondly remember her saying "Don’t Forget Your Ghillies!”

Having a trying week? Feel as if you have two-left feet lately? No worries, we all have days when a reel goes "reely" wrong, a strathspey stutters, or a jig gets jumbled! Sometimes, it's just a challenge to find your dancing shoes!

Those ghillies do tend to go missing, just when you need them. They disappear from dance bags, mysteriously morph from a pair to a single, or get left behind just when you need them most. Those prancing practical-joking poltergeists seem continually at work hiding and moving essential items. Perhaps they have a class of their own and prefer to steal from those of us in the mortal realm! Well, it's a theory ...

If you are doing reels in your head while driving (!), seeing Pillings diagrams in your dreams or tea leaves, counting bars instead of sheep, and your calendar revolves around the Country Dance season, you are a dedicated dancer and a member of a special community! 󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

So if your ghillies have been forgotten, there's a good chance another dancer might lend you a spare pair! They might even fit! You'll need them for this fun three-couple jig! 💛 🤎 💛 🕺 💃 🩰
