Scottish Dancers in a Landscape with Piper

unknown

19th century

From a set of watercolours, this painting shows two 18th century Jacobite Highland dancers performing an exuberant reel before a piper and onlooker.

The uniform of an 18th-century Jacobite soldier varied depending on the individual's role and the time period, but generally included elements of Highland dress and symbols of Stuart allegiance.

For an 18th-century Jacobite Highland officer, the uniform typically included a blue bonnet with a white cockade or red toorie, a heavy blue wool waistcoat with pewter buttons and silver bullion lace, or belted plaid, government tartan (Black Watch) and red and white diced hose and or other traditional additions.
